Babies and Children

Osteopathy can benefit even the smallest and youngest baby using very gentle techniques which can release strains within the babies head and body. These strains are often left from the birth process particularly if the birth involved intervention such as forceps or ventouse or was very long or very fast.

All babies are perfectly adapted to being born and will recover well from the majority of strains that go through their bodies. However like adults, they cannot deal with everything and if there has been a lot to deal with during their delivery then very often there will be tensions and strains left within their body.

Osteopathy can recognize these strains and release them using the gentlest of touch and lightest of pressure-babies can sleep through treatment. We often find that releasing these strains will help with colic, restless sleep patterns, feeding difficulties and generally discontented babies.

Osteopaths who treat babies would like to check every newborn so that they can start life with no compensations to deal with and in the best of health.

As children get older they face changes with growth, falls, teething and general development. Osteopathy can help during these early years of rapid change by working with the body to help adaptation and ease the pressure of teething and resolve the strains of falls.

If a child develops specific problems such as glue ear or asthma then Osteopathy can help drainage in the face and chest, and health of the lungs.

We can often contribute towards the management of behavioral problems, dyslexia and general learning difficulties. We also can be very helpful in treating the more chronic conditions such as cerebral palsy and autism and many parents of children with these conditions will use Osteopathy as regularly as physiotherapy or speech therapy in order to help their child.

During the teenage years Osteopathy can be very effective at working with the body during large growth spurts and alleviating growing pains. Also after illnesses like glandular fever treatment is very helpful at restoring healthy tissue quality which, if left unchecked, can often contribute to ME type symptoms. Also teenage postural strains and sporting strains can be alleviated.
