During and after Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time of many changes and can result in strains on the body which lead to aches and pains. There are also the common symptoms of nausea and indigestion which affect some women.

Osteopathic treatment during pregnancy can help the mother’s body adapt to the changes being demanded of it thus helping to avoid pain. Also treatment can help to rebalance old injuries and strains which may be affecting the pelvis or low back and which may make labour more difficult. Also scar tissue from previous surgery, episiotomy or caesarean section can be treated to allow for optimum function within the mothers body. A monthly treatment throughout pregnancy is advised and certainly for the last 3-4 months.

Heartburn and nausea can also be helped by physically allowing more space for the stomach and releasing any tensions in that area, and also by working with the body’s biochemistry to alleviate nausea symptoms.

After the birth, a postnatal check is recommended to make sure that all the structures are realigned and balanced - this is particularly helpful after epidural or caesarian but is helpful for any mother to aid healing and recovery and can be done as soon as possible. It is helpful to check the baby at the same time for the same reasons.
