Course Content:

This coure is suitable for parent work practitioners. It looks at the essential elements required when working with parents individually or within groups. The course will identify key skills and knowledge needed to be effective in engaging families and will enable workers to recognise factors that impact on work with parents.

Course Aim:

To give parent work practitioners a comprehensive overview of the principles of working with parents, to gain an understanding of underpinning knowledge and skills required to work effectively with parents individually and in groups. 

Learning Outcomes:

Course participants will:

• Understand the role, resonsibilities and tasks of parenting
• Understand factors that influence parenting
• Understand diversity in family life and in parenting
• Understand how human life processes/transitions impact on parental roles, tasks and responsibilities
• Understand factors that contribute to a safe working environment when undertaking outreach & home visiting work in the community
• Understand the importance of effective listening and communication skills
• Understand 'partnership' working and the helping role with parents
• Understand barriers to parental engagement and strategies to overcome these
• Understand how to plan, organise, implement and monitor outreach & home visiting interventions with parents
• Recognise professional boundaries in outreach & home visiting work
• Understand how to reflect on own personal qualities, values, attitudes and beliefs
• Understand safeguarding children issues and appropriate actions to take to safeguard children
• Demonstrate an understanding of confidentiality
• Understand the relationship between current legislation, national guidance and local context in day to day work with families
• Understand group processes
• Understand individual styles and roles within groups
• Understand group leadership skills
• Understand how to plan, monitor and evaluate group work activities
• Understand the importance of identifying personal development needs as a group leader
