Course Content: Groupwork Skills

Groupwork Skills for Parent Work Practitioners is suitable for parent work practitioners from statutory, voluntary, community and private organisations. This course will provide valuable learning in relation to setting up parenting groups, recognise the responsibilities of an effective parenting group facilitator, and explore aspects of group dynamics and basic groupwork theories.

Course Aim:

To familiarise parent work practitioners with the knowledge and skills required to facilitate parenting groups as a technique for supporting parents in developing parenting skills.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

• Understand group processes and theories
• Recognise individual learning preferences
• Recognise various roles within groups
• Recognise group leadership skills and good practice
• Understand how to plan, monitor and evaluate group work activities
• Understand the importance of identifying own development needs as a group        leader
• Identify factors that contribute to a safe learning environment
• Identify ways in which group leaders can make participants feel more comfortable
• Describe the practical steps required to set up a group
• Identify potential barriers to parents engaging in group
