Course Content: Outreach & Home Visiting

This course is suitable for parent work practitioners from various organisations. It looks at the essential elements required when working in an outreach or home visiting role. The course will identify key skills and knowledge needed to be effective in engaging families and will enable workers to recognise factors that impact on work with parents.

Course Aim:

To give parent work practitioners a comprehensive overview of the principles of
working with parents, to gain an understanding of underpinning knowledge and
skills required to work effectively with parents.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the responsibilities, tasks and roles of parents
  • Identify factors that influence parenting & recognise diversity in families
  • Recognise life cycle processes that impact on parenting
  • Reflect on and evaluate own beliefs, values and attitudes
  • Relate current legislation, national guidance and local context to day to day work with families
  • Identify the roles and tasks of an effective parent work practitioner and define professional boundaries
  • Identify the key skills, knowledge and qualities of an effective parent work practitioner
  • Demonstrate an understanding of ’partnership’ working with parents and barriers to parental engagement
  • Demonstrate understanding of the range of community support services available to support parents and families
  • Complete a Professional Development Journal and identify future development needs
