Asfare at the time was a significant road-surfacing contractor with ambitions to expand its activity into road planing. I joined Asfare to broaden my experience and to participate fully in the expansion. I started my duties with Asfare as a Surfacing Supervisor, taking charge of gangs engaged in carrying out surfacing contracts ranging from estate roads to main public highways. In 1983, Asfare purchased its first planing machine and I identified a personal bias for planing and moved to this activity in 1987. I took charge of outside supervision as well as a certain amount of office work. I progressed gradually to all duties relating to planing, including customer liaison, quoting, planning of work and agreeing accounts. In 1989 I was appointed Manager of the planing section and my progression culminated with my appointment as Director in 1991 and then Managing Director in 1993. I left Asfare in 1994 to set up my own company. This company became Power Plane Limited in 1996 and has steadily grown and is now in possession of the most up to date fleet of planing, kerb cutting and recycling machines in the country. I am a past Chairman of the Association of Planing Contractors and am a Member of the Institute of Asphalt Technology. |
