Stonehaven History

The building was commissioned by the Post Office and opened for business in 1956.

Confirmation of the first North Sea oil find was relayed through Stonehaven radio from the Sea Quest drilling rig.  This was the BP Forties Field which was announced to the public in 1970.  The field started production in 1975.

The government requirement that BT radio service maintain a distress watch on the 500HZ wavelength came to an end on 31st December 1997.  Morse traffic and weather forecasts to shipping continued and these UK wide services were centralised at Stonehaven which became the final staffed station in the UK.  Stonehaven radio station closed on 30th June 2000 and at the end of service life it also controlled the following coastal stations:

  • Wick Radio
  • Lands End Radio
  • Portpatrick Radio
  • Humber Radio
